Fall Fellows Explore Climate-Smart Ag Solutions
Our Fall 2024 Climate-Smart Ag cohort of Fellows embarked on an extensive tour across Indiana and Missouri, immersing themselves in the diverse challenges and innovation opportunities in the agrifood value chain. The enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by our Fellows as they engaged with industry leaders was great to watch.
Our journey took us to a wide array of companies, each offering unique insights into different facets of the agri-food sector. In Indiana, we visited The Nature Conservancy, Wallpe Farms, Clark Farms, Benton Dairy, Beck's Hybrids, Hageman Group, US Ag, Elanco and Corteva. These visits provided our Fellows with a comprehensive view of sustainable farming practices and the intricate interworking of various industry participants.
The St. Louis leg of our trip was equally enlightening, with stops at the Danforth Plant Sciences Center, Gates Ag One, Bunge, AB InBev, Bank of America, Land O’Lakes, Purina, Nestlé and Bayer. These visits offered invaluable insights into plant science research, global agricultural initiatives, food processing and the financial aspects of the agrifood value chain.

The diverse experiences gained during this trip are now serving as a foundation for our Fellows as they develop Climate-Smart Ag solutions to address the complex challenges in the food supply chain. It's been inspiring to watch these bright minds collaborate with our corporate partners, reinforcing the immense potential of DIAL Ventures in driving significant impact in the rapidly evolving agrifood sector.

Future of Agrifood Workshop: Shaping Climate-Smart Ag Solutions
Following our impactful Residency trip, DIAL Ventures hosted the Future of Agrifood Innovation Workshop on September 25 and 26 in downtown Indianapolis. This two-day event served as a crucial next step for our Fellows, allowing them to further develop the solutions they conceptualized after learning about the challenges in the agrifood supply chain during their Residency experiences.
Our Fellows presented groundbreaking concepts designed to address key challenges in climate-smart production practices. These innovative ideas spanned crucial climate and sustainability areas including:
- Agronomic and financial planning for climate-smart practices
- Risk mitigation and financial incentives for adoption
- Supply chain carbon intensity traceability
- Digitized/automated measuring, monitoring, reporting and verification
The workshop emphasized collaboration over presentations, providing attendees with interactive sessions that fostered engagement and idea exchange. This format allowed our Fellows to refine their concepts based on real-world feedback from industry experts. Participants had the opportunity to:
- Provide critical feedback on challenges and proposed solutions
- Engage in small-group discussions with diverse industry stakeholders
- Contribute to refining and prioritizing concepts for further development

This event brought together leaders from across the agrifood value chain, including input manufacturers, ag retailers, farmers, food companies and financial institutions. The diverse mix of expertise and perspectives led to rich discussions and valuable insights that will directly influence the development of practical, scalable solutions for a Climate-Smart agrifood system.
We're excited to see how these concepts, born from real-world observations and sharpened through expert feedback, will shape the future of sustainable agriculture and food production.
